Knights Calling !!!

I had just come back home after a hectic day at office and was relaxing on my couch when a WhatsApp notification popped up. It was a message from The Knight Ryders asking me if I was interested in joining for a 3 day ride to Kotagiri with the Knights. I was thrilled at the thought and immediately said ‘YES’. Came 18th May night, my heart was pounding with excitement as I packed my bag for my first long ride with The Knight Ryders. I had been a part of the group for only a few short rides and this was my chance to prove myself as a worthy challenger for Knighthood.

Day-1, 19 May 2023

We were a group of 21 riders, all geared up and ready to hit the road, assembled at Tambaram by 4 AM. There was a briefing on the road discipline, hand signal and ride positions by Santosh. The group was split into two packs, each pack having a lead, sweep and tail. My position was fourth in the second pack, which I would maintain throughout the ride. For Knight Ryders, rider’s safety is utmost importance and no deviation from the standard procedure and discipline would be tolerated.

The ride was flagged off by 4.15 AM. There were a few members, not part of the riding group, just came down to see us off. I was astonished to see the passion they have for riding and for The Knight Ryders. Soon we were thundering down the highway and we were greeted with a cool breeze that refreshed us for the long journey ahead. We reached Mettupalayam by noon and soon we entered the hill roads, our bikes roared through winding roads, cutting through lush green forests and picturesque landscapes. It was a surreal experience that left me in awe of the natural beauty surrounding us.

We reached Kotagiri by 4.30 PM and checked in to Chow Chow valley resort. The resort is situated amidst the stunning Nilgiris, surrounded by tea estates. The resort offers comfortable accommodation with spacious rooms and beautiful views of the lush green surroundings.

As we were a large group, we opted for the dormitory which was spacious, neat, and clean and suited us well. After quickly freshening up and gathered for our post ride review. The new riders, including me, shared our experience of the ride with the other riders in the group. It was a great opportunity for me to learn from the more experienced riders, who gave me some valuable tips for future rides. Then it was party time, followed by dinner. Unfortunately, one of our riders who was supposed to join us at Mettupalayam, met with a minor accident. It was then, I understood the real essence of the Knight Ryders’ motto – ‘no one is left behind’. The members were constantly in touch with the affected rider and made sure that he was taken care. He later joined us at the resort for the remaining days of the trip.

Day-2, 20 May 2023

The second day was dedicated to local sightseeing. Kodanad viewpoint was the first stop on our itinerary – a viewing deck located at a height of 6200 feet above sea level. The winding roads leading to the point offered breath-taking views of the surrounding valleys and mountains, making for a truly exhilarating ride. Upon reaching the spot, we were treated to a panoramic view of the beautiful Nilgiris Hills. The lush greenery, rolling hills and misty landscape were a treat for the eyes!

Next, we made our way to Catherine Falls, which is a popular waterfall located close by. Unfortunately, the trek to the falls was closed by forest officials due to an untoward incident the previous day. However, we were able to witness the falls from a viewpoint located nearby. The sight of the cascading water amidst the scenic surroundings was a sight to behold. The ride back to the town was equally enjoyable, as we cruised on the winding roads and took in the enchanting views of the mountains and valleys. The cool climate added another layer of appeal to the trip, making it even more memorable. The entire day was spent exploring the local scenery, capturing picturesque moments, and making memories that we would cherish for a lifetime. As evening descended, we had a gathering of the group at the resort. Over a cup of tea, we were able to learn more about the group’s history and the efforts they have put in to keep it running over the years. It was an inspiring experience and I was glad to have been able to connect with like-minded individuals. With the day’s adventures behind us, soon we retired early for the night, eager to catch some rest before the ride back home.

Day-3, 21 May 2023

It was time to bid farewell to the serene hills of Kotagiri. We woke up early in the morning and headed towards our motorcycles, ready to start our journey back to Chennai. After packing breakfast from the resort, the ride started off smoothly by 7 AM, with all the riders full of energy and enthusiasm, set to tackle the open road. About an hour into the journey, one of the riders experienced a problem with the bike. Luckily, we managed to find a nearby spare part depot and get the spare. But it took more than an hour to sort out the issue. Nonetheless, we continued our journey, taking in the stunning scenery as we passed through villages and quaint towns. As the day progressed, the blazing sun beat down on us mercilessly, taking its toll on all the riders. Nevertheless, we made sure to take frequent hydration breaks, ensuring that everyone stayed comfortable throughout the ride.

By 6.30 PM, we had covered a major part of our journey and it was time for a final break before tackling the last leg of the ride. We pulled over to a coffee shop, enjoying some refreshments, and refuelling our motorcycles for the final stretch back to Chennai. With renewed energy, the riders peeled off on the last part of our journey, as we made our way through the bustling streets of Chennai. Finally, after a long and exhausting ride, we reached our homes, relieved to have completed the trip safely. Although the journey was filled with challenges and extreme weather conditions, it was an exhilarating experience that brought us closer as a group, making memories that would last a lifetime. The time spent with these amazing riders was short, yet it left a lasting impression on me. The camaraderie, the thrill of adventure, and the sense of belonging that The Knight Ryders provide were priceless.

I knew then, that this was only the beginning of my long association with The Knight Ryders!!!
